Prescribed Burns"Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time, and decreases the potential for wildfire." (Dylan Gavagni, park manager, St. Sebastian River Preserve, and formerly at Savannas Preserve State Park) Prescribed burns are used to reduce hazardous fuel buildups thereby providing increased protection to people, their homes, and the park. Other uses include disease control in young pines, wildlife habitat improvement, preservation of endangered plant and animal species (such as Savannas Mint and Florida Scrub Jay), and the maintenance of fire-dependent ecosystems (such as sand pine). |
