Gopher Tortoise Hikes

Celebrate Gopher Tortoises at the Savannas Preserve State Park!

Enjoy the Savannas Preserve State Park during a Gopher Tortoise Event including a presentation and several field activities. During some events, biologist Doug Rogers will use a camera to explore the inside of a gopher tortoise burrow. Burrows can be more than 30 feet long, and can contain hundreds of animal species that live alongside the tortoises. Other events will include locating tortoises that Doug will weigh, measure, number, and check for illnesses.

Youth participants will be sent on a hunt to search for signs that a gopher tortoise has recently been there. They will use GPS units to help locate scat, footprints, shell drags, and more.

All activities are FREE with paid park admission: $2 for single person, or $3 for a vehicle with 2-8 people. Cash only. Reservations will be required
by calling the Education Center at 772-398-2779.

Check the online calendar for dates and times.
