Outreach Programs
While we are equipped to offer these programs at the Savannas Preserve State Park as well, the following is a list of programs we have available to bring to your classroom in case you cannot make it to us. Each is comprised of a presentation and a hands-on activity. Some of these programs can be facilitated for large groups, but most have been designed for small class sizes to enable one-on-one attention. To cover the cost of traveling to your facility and activity supplies we charge $25 per visit.
Whose Bones Are These?Students can learn a lot about the natural world without ever encountering a wild animal. This hands-on program allows students to become animal detectives. We bring a variety of interesting bones to the school, encouraging students to inspect them to learn the structure and purpose of different bones. This will include a short lesson on different kinds of bones (hollow bird bones, snake vertebrae, etc.) They will work together handling and inspecting bones to determine what animals the bones came from, and compare how bones differ between species.

Natives vs. ExoticsFlorida is one of the most biodiverse regions of the United States. With over 4,000 plant taxa in the state, 3,600 of these are Florida natives, and impressively nearly 175 of these are endemic to our state alone. This program provides a presentation focusing on the native habitats and the invasive exotic speices who threaten them. We talk about both plants and animals and bring in samples of native and exotic plants.

The Wonderful World of WaterThis is a five-part series of programs designed to enhance your students' classroom experience when focusing on water. A set of water quality presentations and activities have been developed, as well as programs relating to watersheds and the Savannas freshwater habitat. Four programs are designed to lead up to the background knowledge necessary to allow for the students to actually test the quality of their water.
